Ege University is a public university in İzmir, Turkey. It was founded in 1955 with the faculties of Medicine and Agriculture. It is the first university to start courses in İzmir and the fourth oldest university in Turkey. Ege University commonly ranks close to the top among research universities in Turkey. Aquaculture is one of seven strategic areas at EGE Fisheries Faculty. It is devoted to interdisciplinary research for a sustainable aquaculture cultivation of the marine, brakish and freshwater organisms based on industrial challenges and expertise in the involved research teams. In the field of aquaculture and related areas, EGE has an academic staff of 150 persons. The scientific team of EGE Fisheries Faculty Aquaculture Department has more than 25 years of experience conducting research on marine science, marine ecology, marine pollution, nutrition and feeding technology, fish disease, fisheries and seafood processing technology, aquaculture and cultivation of marine and freshwater finfish, shellfish, and algae, including macroalgae (or seaweeds or marine-vegetables). A strong expansion of the activities and EGE’s national position as capital for research and development resulted in the establishment of Urla Research Unit in 1982 and Dalyan Research Unit in 1988. Together, they provide a stimulating and integrated environment for applied research in the field of aquaculture technologies and environment-related issues. The facilities are an important part in the interdisciplinary activities promoted by EGE’s marine strategic area. They are also actively used for educational purposes. About 100 students with BSc and 10 students with MSc and/or PhD degree graduate annually.

The scientists of EGE have published many peer-reviewed research articles in national and international journals and participated in the projects with national and EU funding, such as “Nephyrops and Cetacean Species Selection Information and Technology” NECESSITY (01 March, 2004-31 April, 2007); “Research and Development projects to find Solutions to Struggle against various Marine Pollution” MAPO (1 September, 2005- 31 August, 2007), and and “Exploring Marine Resources for Bioactive Compounds:From Discovery to Sustainable Production and Industrial Applications” MAREX (August 2010- August 2014). During recent years, the facilities have contributed significantly in achievements on cultivation of algae and their industrial applications in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, animal feed, agricultural, aquacultural, and renewable energy resouces, such as biodiesel products.
