The portal "Gramota.ru" was created in 2000 on the recommendation of the Commission "Russian language in the media" of the Council on Russian language under the Government of the Russian Federation. The portal was created with the financial support of the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Press, Broadcasting and Mass Communications and received further support from the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications.

On the Internet, the portal debuted on November 14, 2000, within the framework of the round table "Russian Language on the Air: Problems and Ways of Solving them", organized by the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs. From the first day of the portal's operation on the Internet, the project was headed by Alexey Kormilitsyn (1961-2013). The portal "Gramota.ru" was created primarily as a reference for media professionals, but subsequently its audience has significantly expanded and now the resource is addressed to all Internet users who need expert help and in operational information about the Russian language. Employees of Gramoty.ru take an active part in scientific and practical conferences, seminars, roundtables, festivals, speak publicly in Russian, participate in the preparation of TV and radio programs dedicated to the Russian language.
