Earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, droughts, huaycos and landslides are the natural phenomena that haunt our planet and that leads to destruction, altering the daily lives of populations. Being our country located in a zone of seismic and volcanic activity, besides being vulnerable to the climatic changes, it is important the existence of an institution that studies the phenomena that affect our territory.

Under this statement, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) is a Decentralized Public Organism of the Ministry of the Environment that was created with the purpose of applying Geophysics, that is, its primary function is to study all phenomena related to the structure, Physical conditions and evolutionary history of the Earth. The IGP has the capacity to serve the needs of the country in such important areas as: Seismology, Volcanology and the El Niño Study.

Currently, we occupy a position of merit in the international scientific community, a competitive world where everything provides: equipment, scholarships and financial support, expects intangible results as counterpart. It is important to emphasize that we fulfill a social role, as we contribute to prevent and mitigate phenomena with great destructive potential. Our main activities are: scientific research, education and service rendering in Applied Geophysics. With more than 50 years of contributions of knowledge and technology, we have renowned research specialists, all Peruvians, who contribute with talent and experience to serve the Peruvian population.
