The growing digitization and networking process within our society has a large influence on all aspects of everyday life. Large amounts of data are being produced permanently, and when these are analyzed and interlinked they have the potential to create new knowledge and intelligent solutions for economy and society. Big Data can make important contributions to the technical progress in our societal key sectors and help shape business. What is needed are innovative technologies, strategies and competencies for the beneficial use of Big Data to address societal needs.

Insights gained in FI-PPP Phase 1 emphasize the need for novel ICT solutions that allow radical improvements for collaboration in business networks. Primary sectors demanding such solutions are Agri-Food and Transport & Logistics industries: several actors (incl. enterprises, authorities, service providers) need to exchange information & communicate across org. borders to conduct business. Current ICT solutions limit this to mostly manual efforts, therewith tremendously hampering business efficiency, effectiveness & sustainability.

Agro-industrial companies face the necessity of acquiring more information and control over their crops and the operations they perform in order to produce them. The challenge lies in reducing the hydric and energy resources they use with the objective of increasing their competitiveness and reducing the impact on the environment. Under the brand name of bynse, our SME cubenube (www.cubenube.com) has developed the first big data solution for agriculture in the world.

The aim of this project is to demonstrate the advantages of a generic data platform. By means of case studies, we will showcase how existing sensor prototypes can be combined with additional on farm (sensor) data, to build new applications and improve decision support systems. The first case study will focus on grassland based production systems. Grassland based production systems often offer a possibility to use marginal land in LFAs (Less Favoured Area) that could otherwise not be used. The second case study will focus on behavioural monitoring.

Project is targeting to implement a pilot project to increase animal production and accelerate rural socio-economic development by precision (low input & reduced traffic) fertilization of irregular sloped mountainous pastures by using ICT and automation. Project will create a platform that integrates and harmonizes existing software and hardware technologies into a single system for pasture management.
