Controlled Traffic Farming (CTF) management can play a key role in sustaining soils and future crop production, which are today threatened by heavy machinery traffic and intensive production systems. To play this role in sustainable intensification, CTF needs to be developed to become a mainstream technology rather than a niche practice.

Target market of GIDROM project is Greenhouse (Gh) Agriculture. A main problem of Gh farmers is monitoring the Gh environment to control plant diseases. Unchecked plant pathologies cause extensive crop damage and direct losses to farmers up to 15% of yearly incomes. The cost of pesticides and chemicals application is €2.000-5.000 / ha x year. Worldwide area dedicated to Gh agriculture production is about 800.000 ha of which 20% (160.000 ha) is situated in Europe (mainly in Spain, Turkey, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, France).

Producing the highest quality crop with a maximized yield requires the real-time measurement and actionable analysis of a large number of plant-related external factors. These factors are meteorological, geological, organic and human-related. Measuring and processing these parameters is at the core of any decision-support system intending to streamline the production of farmlands. Currently there are no solutions available that can quantify all on-site plant-related parameters in real-time.

By integrating existing experienced networks and using specific and relevant cases across Europe the project will strengthen “food culture” to improve economic viability of local chains resulting in a greater diversity of produce with a cultural identity.

Genetic, epigenetic and phenotypic variability and knowledge from farms and in public repositories, will be concentrated in a TRADITOM database and seed repository (O1).

These four crops constitute 66% of the value of European horticultural production, and over 65,000 accessions are available within the consortium.

TRUE is underpinned by science excellence in the natural and social sciences, and humanities. The main aim of TRUE is to identify and enable transition paths to realise successful legume-supported production systems and agri-feed and -food chains.
