Our challenge: there is sufficient capacity in the world to produce enough food to feed everyone adequately; nevertheless, in spite of progress made over the last two decades, 793 million people still suffer from chronic hunger. Among children, it is estimated that 161 million under five years of age are chronically malnourished (stunted), almost 99 million are underweight, and about 51 million are acutely malnourished (wasted). Our mandate is to support members in their efforts to ensure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food.
IGA is a centre of research in genetics and genomics, committed to explore and exploit natural diversity of plants and organisms relevant to agriculture and non-food crops industry. IGA scientists have specific competences in grapevine genetics, genomics and breeding, grapevine crop management, adaptation of grapevine to abiotic stresses, exploration of grapevine germplasm for disease resistance.
UNIVR-DB is based in the Biotechnology Department, Verona University (VU). The main competences of the group are plant genetics, molecular biology, plant pathology and biotechnology. The group has recognized expertise and facilities for large-scale analysis of gene expression, by microarray and by New Generation sequencing technologies.
The Institutes involved in the project are “Viticulture and Fruit Tree Production” (VIT) and “Entomology and Plant pathology” (EPP). VIT activities are mostly focused on applied grape eco-physiology and vineyard management practices with special emphasis on yield/quality relationships, summer pruning techniques and approaches to meet new requirements imposed by climate change. EPP studies pathogens to understand their relationships with host plants and the environment as well as to forecast their behaviour to prevent damages.
The UNIMI is active in the following research fields: physiology of grape ripening and grapes enological quality, in relation to environmental conditions and suitability for viticulture; identification, collection, preservation and enhancement of genetic resources of cultivated and wild grapevines.
