Main competences of Research Institute of Viticulture and Enology-PTE (RIVE) are: (i) germplasm preservation in a gene bank over 1600 accessions, (ii) clonal selection of 16, mainly Hungarian autochton cultivars, (iii) plant physiological measurements for selecting cultivars with better adaptation to climate change, (iv) germplasm evaluation for new resistance sources against several pathogens. JKI Geilweilerhofis a public grapevine breeding institute funded by the German Federal Ministry of Nutrition, Agriculture and Consumers Protection. It is in charge of breeding new grapevine cultivars combining high wine quality and fungal disease resistance for sustainable viticulture in Germany. Furthermore, is maintains the German grapevine repository comprising of about 3000 accessions. More than 50 % of the collection consists of genotypes conferring resistances mostly originating from American Vitis species.
